The Google Chrome tab startup page shows your recently closed websites, your recent Chrome apps or your most visited websites. You can remove an individual page from the tab startup page, or you can disable the feature altogether and enable a traditional single-website homepage. When you remove an individual page, the next most visited page takes its place.

Removing a Single Page From the Tab Startup

EASY - I just did it. Open one Chrome browser to the thumbnails page. Open another to the page you want to add. Click on the title bar of the page you want to add, and drag it to the thumbnail on the other page.

Open Google Chrome. If the browser is already open, click on the 'Plus' symbol on the top of the browser to open a new tab. This brings you to the tab startup page.

Move your mouse cursor over the website thumbnail you want to remove. A header will appear above the thumbnail.

Click on the 'X' button in the right corner to remove the website from the tab startup page.

Open Google Chrome and click on the 'Wrench' logo in the right corner of the browser window.

Move down to the 'Home Page' section. The selection should read 'Use the New Tab Page.'

Check the box next to 'Open This Page.' Enter the website address you want to use as the homepage, and then close the window.

Tip

  • You can also reset the sites shown on the new tab startup page by clearing your browser history.

Changing the Chrome homepage makes a different page open when you press the Home button in Google Chrome. The Home button looks like a house and is located in the top-left corner of the browser window beside the refresh button.

Normally, the default homepage is the New Tab page, which gives you quick access to recently visited websites and a Google search bar. While some users might find this page useful, you may want to specify another particular URL as your homepage.

This article applies to the latest version of the Google Chrome browser for PC and mobile devices. You can update Google Chrome manually for free if you are running an older version.

How to Change the Homepage in Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and select the menu button located in the top-right corner of the window. It's the one with three stacked dots.

  2. Choose Settings from the drop-down menu.

  3. In the Search settings box at the top of that screen, type home.

  4. Under Show home button, make sure the Home button is enabled.

  5. Select the option beside Enter custom web address and type a URL into the text box so that Chrome will open the web page of your choice when you press the Home button.

  6. After you change your homepage, you can continue using Chrome normally since changes are saved automatically.

How to Change Which Pages Open When Chrome Starts

The steps above are for changing the homepage in the Google Chrome browser, not for changing which pages open when Chrome starts. To do that:

  1. Open the Chrome Settings menu.

  2. Type startup into the Search settings field.

  3. Select Open a specific page or set of pages.

  4. Enter the URL you want to appear when you open Chrome and select Add. You can also add additional pages if you desire.
