Quake 2 High Res
Mar 19, 2018 - hey guys, do you have any recommended mod for improving the texture of this game? Note well: I'm looking only for better graphics, not for.
So now when we have Quake 2 working in VR with the previously mentioned VR MOD, I just had to try it with HD textures and weapon/opponent model enhancements available online. I spent a few hours trying to find the best quality HD textures and finally found some that are really impressive for an old game like Quake II. Seriously, the game looks SO much better with the HD textures and weapon model improvements.
I made a new Quake 2 VR video for today, comparing 'side-by-side' the best custom HD textures and model improvements I could find online, vs the default Quake 2 textures and graphics. Download links and installation instructions are included down below in this post.
The difference is really huge, the game looks way more detailed and sharper now. I hope you can see it in the video as well.
Also, big thanks to some of you guys hinting me to use a XBOX One gamepad in my left hand (while still having Vive controller in right hand for aiming). This makes it much easier and glitch-free to move using Vive with free locomotion thanks to the gamepad's thumbstick/d-pad. It apparently works with any gamepad such as PS4 and others as well. With the Xbox One controller plugged in to my PC, it was working right away without any customizations. This way, we dont need to struggle with the movement while using the Vive controller touchpad. Awesome tips, thanks for that guys!
To get the best visuals, sharpness and clarity I recommend you to use in-game Super Sampling of at least 2.0 and also other important in-game graphical settings in the step 5 here below.
How to Install the HD Textures + enhanced weapon models:
Download the Quake 2 HD Texture pack from one of the links below. (should be a 377 MB zip file, and when extracted around 700 MB):
2. Download the Quake 2 models from one of the links below. (should be 17 MB or 19 MB zip file):
3. Extract both zip files into the baseq2 folder in your Quake2VR modded game folder
4. If you extracted it right, you should have a 'textures' folder and a 'models' folder inside your baseq2 folder.
5. If you downloaded the High Resolution Weapons zip file that only contains a pak8.pak file instead of a 'models' folder, thats works good as well. Just put the pak8.pak file into the baseq2 folder. It works the same way.
6. Start the Quake VR MOD on HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Full instructions in my first Quake 2 VR video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl7a98MBgus
7. For best quality, go into Video-settings in game Options and set:
Anti-Aliasing: OFF
Texture Filter: Trilinear
Quake 2 Remastered
Anisotropic Filtering: x16 (max)
Texture Quality: Highest
Quake 2 High Res Weapons
Texture compression: High Quality
For perfect sharpness set Super Sampling to 2.0 in Options - Virtual Reality - Advanced Options.
Enjoy Quake II in Virtual Reality with best possible graphics, clarity and HD textures, enhanced weapons and opponent models! :)

This custom MOD is created by Luke Groeninger and Malcolm Smith, and you can grab it now for a full VR experience with Quake 2: http://www.malcolm-s.net/q2vr/
This game is really a blast in VR, once again big thanks to the creators of this VR MOD, and of course ID Software for the game itself!
