This study discusses batik as Indonesian national identity following UNESCO’s acknowledgement of batik as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The focus of this research is Java's northern coastal batik that is widespread in Cirebon, Pekalongan, Batang and Lasem. Studies with a focus on batik as lifestyle has not yet been taken widely. Batik consumption then raises questions that will be answered in this study: How can batik form a multicultural lifestyle? Does batik give an answer for Indonesian people who are currently vulnerable to the concept of Indonesianness and Islam? This research suggests that the traditional use of batik in every occasion indicates that batik has become a lifestyle. Multiculural lifestyle in the use of batik is evidenced by the motifs, coloring, and philosophical values of Batik particularly from those of North coast of Java. ​​ Batik also represents and gives multicultural identity to the users, batik workshop, and the city of the batik makers. The research combines observation, library research with interviews with batik experts, producers and users in the batik producer regions. The application of Bourdieu’s theory of taste and Ben and Hollow’s theory of everyday lifestyle lead batik lifestyle as category of analysis in this interdisciplinary study is expected to be utilized historians, anthropologists and sociologists to portray multicultural lifestyle in contemporary Java.
