Ubuntu 18.10 was released with great new desktop theme ‘Yaru’. However, there are always some people prefer old Ubuntu desktop look.

And it’s easy to restore the old desktop theme in Ubuntu 18.10 via following steps.

The Unity desktop had been a part of Ubuntu for 6 long years. As such, it did manage to earn its fair share of fan following. If you’re not loving your new GNOME desktop on Ubuntu 18.04, you can still install Unity desktop. The objective is to install the Unity desktop environment and perform a switch from the default 18.04 desktop environment. 1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcut or by searching for ‘terminal’ from software launcher. When it opens, run command to install light-themes:

Type user password (no asterisks feedback) for sudo prompts and hit Enter.

2. Install Gnome Tweaks if you don’t have it:

3. Finally launch Gnome Tweaks and navigate to Appearance tab.

There set themes to:

• Applications -> Ambiance
• Cursor -> DMZ-White
• Icons -> Ubuntu-mono-dark

That’s it. To revert the changes, simply set those values back to Yaru in step 3.

So with the new fandangle algorithm for compression for installation on 18.10 taking about 4 mins 30 secs, I thought hey I got time to stuff around and reinstall if I completely break something... I miss unity.

To install Unity on 18.04/18.10 just:

sudo apt install ubuntu-unity-desktop

Anyhow playing around with it made me realise I miss it and like it but I'm not sure how viable it is on such a new base. Is there anybody out there running it on anything other than 14.04/16.04? If so, do you find it stable?

Cosmic cuttlefish boots so quick on my ThinkPad A485 with Raven Ridge APU so I need the latest Mesa/Kernel hence the newer base.

Edit: Another option I might try is net minimal install and then install Unity as the sole DE. This is what I love about linux!
