The rumour mill has been running wild for a few years now with whispers of a possible Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster, but there's still been no official confirmation from Activision.

However, with speculation still increasing, it looks pretty much nailed on that in 2019, we could well see a glorious new version of one of (if not the) greatest COD games ever produced.

And it isn't all just wishful thinking. In fact, there are quite a few solid reasons to believe that a remastered version of the game may be in the works.

Firstly, 2019 will mark a decade since the initial release of Modern Warfare 2. Given that Modern Warfare Remastered dropped close to the original's anniversary it does seem likely that the same treatment could be in store for the follow-up.

Speaking of Modern Warfare Remastered, that game was met with a great reaction from fans and critics alike. So wouldn't it be in Activision's best interests to do the same thing with what was arguably a much better title?

Then there's the fact that Modern Warfare 2 is yet to come to backwards compatibility on Xbox One. Unlike other titles such as Black Ops, Black Ops 2, and so on, MW2 still hasn't been brought to backwards compatibility. Could this indicate that the publisher is waiting for a remaster before pushing the button?

We'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, Sledgehammer Games co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield have left the studio behind Call of Duty WW II to shift their attention to new 'executive duties' within Activision.

'We thank Glen and Michael for their tremendous body of work on Call of Duty and look forward to continuing to collaborate with them in their new roles,' an Activision spokesperson said in a prepared statement sent to Glixel.

'These changes have created an opportunity to elevate one of the key leaders at the studio, Aaron Halon, to lead Sledgehammer Games. Aaron is a founding member of Sledgehammer Games and the natural fit to lead the team.'

In a statement, Schofield thanked Activision for the opportunity to lead Sledgehammer Games.

'Now, it's time to try other things,' he said. 'Activision has offered me the opportunity to focus my energy on something I'm very passionate about, exploring new game ideas for the company. It's something I just couldn't pass up.

'Working with such a great studio of developers at Sledgehammer Games has been an honour and the highlight of my career. The team is in great hands with Aaron, he has my full support and confidence.'

Speculation continues to grow that this will happen - let's keep everything crossed in the meantime.

Recently, a listing on Amazon's Italian website showed up for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. This is a game many fans of the series expect to see remastered at some point, given the fact that Activision released a remaster of Modern Warfare alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in 2016.

But the listing in question (via IGN) doesn't add up for many reasons, and given that it is possible to fake a listing it's important to keep these reasons in mind when appraising the validity of this particular bit of news:

The release date.

The listing shows an April 30th release date. That doesn't make sense at all given that CoD games release in November typically (or October for this year's Black Ops 4.) While it could be a placeholder date, I'm puzzled why April 3oth would be chosen. More often than not placeholder dates are 12/31 of the given year.

Infinity Ward vs Treyarch.

It makes very little sense to release a remastered Modern Warfare game alongside Treyarch's Black Ops 4. Treyarch didn't make Modern Warfare 2, but they have plenty of other older games (like the original Black Ops) that would be great remasters.

I'd be more than a little surprised to see an Infinity Ward game release either as a stand-alone or bundled product during a Treyarch/Black Ops year.

It's not a bundle.

Speaking of stand-alone releases and bundles, the Amazon listing is for a stand-alone SKU. While that would be great news, it strikes me as much more likely that any future remasters in this series will be bundled with the main release first (even though I think that's a bad idea from a PR standpoint.) That way Activision makes money off anyone who buys the Deluxe Edition for the bundled game and then makes more money when they release it by itself later on.

It's too cheap.

It's listed at €19.99---about $25 USD. That's much lower than I would expect from a Call of Duty remaster. The stand-alone Modern Warfare Remastered cost $40.

Unless Activision is suddenly not trying to make all the money in the world, well, don't count on it.

Given all these considerations, I'm willing to bet this listing is false. Of course, even if it is a fake we could still very well see a Modern Warfare 2 Remastered down the road, though I think it's more likely in 2019 when Infinity Ward's next Call of Duty is slated to land. Of the three current studios working on this franchise, Infinity Ward seems to be having the toughest time wowing players. Ghosts was widely panned and Infinite Warfare fell short of expectations even though it was better than many gave it credit for.

We'll know more on May 16th when Treyarch and Activision are set to unveil more details about Black Ops 4 and, presumably, whether any sort of remaster is in the oven---or sooner if this really does come out on April 30th. I just find that highly unlikely, but will happily eat my hat if I'm wrong.

Oh, and speaking of Modern Warfare 2, you can get it for half off on Steam right now. That's just ten bucks.
